Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor from Merck. It was approved as Proscar for an enlarged prostate in 1992 and as Propecia for male pattern hair loss in 1997.

Finasteride research
The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2003, found about 25% fewer prostate cancers in men on finasteride than on placebo over seven years.
