IGF-1 DES at a glance
IGF-1 DES is insulin-like growth factor 1 missing its first three amino acids, Gly-Pro-Glu. That leaves a 67-amino-acid protein of about 7.4kDa that still binds the IGF-1 receptor.
It was found naturally in bovine colostrum and later in human brain tissue in the mid-1980s. The missing three residues are exactly where IGF binding proteins grab hold, so very little of it gets tied up.
How IGF-1 DES works
IGF-1 works through the IGF-1 receptor, a tyrosine kinase that turns on the PI3K-Akt and MAPK pathways. Those pathways push cells to grow, divide and resist cell death.
In tissue, most IGF-1 is held by six binding proteins that keep it from reaching the receptor. Without its first three residues, IGF-1 DES slips past them, so more of it is free to act locally. It also clears faster than IGF-1 LR3.

IGF-1 DES research
Francis, Ballard and colleagues in Adelaide reported that des(1-3)IGF-1 was several times more potent than normal IGF-1 in cell culture, and showed the reason was its weak binding to IGF binding proteins.
That finding led to the design of IGF-1 LR3, which uses the same trick plus an extension to last longer. Most research use is in cell culture and growth studies.

How IGF-1 DES compares
IGF-1 DES 1mg is easier to place once you see it next to the compounds it’s usually compared with. IGF-1 DES is IGF-1 missing three residues, potent locally but cleared faster than IGF-1 LR3. The others:

Reconstituting IGF-1 DES 1mg
The volume of liquid you add sets the concentration. For a vial holding 1mg:
- 1mL of water gives 1mg/mL
- 2mL of water gives 0.5mg/mL

Use sterile bacteriostatic water. Warm the sealed vial to room temperature first so no condensation gets in, add the water slowly along the glass wall, and swirl gently until it’s clear. Never shake it.
